After studying Drama and History of Art at college I was offered the position of General Manager at the York Gallery in my home town of Tunbridge Wells. I juggled my career betwen the theatre, TV, film and art worlds until 2007, when I set up Dominic Kemp Modern British Prints in order to concentrate on twentieth-century Neo-Romantic and St Ives printmakers.
In 2008 I was asked to curate the 50th Anniversary Exhibition of the Curwen Studio at the Curwen Gallery and became chief adviser to the Curwen Archive a year later. I am also consultant adviser for prints at The Chambers Collection and Austin/Desmond Fine Art, where I curated the major survey of Terry Frost’s prints: Red with Black on the Side in 2022.
I work closely with many private collectors and public institutions, helping to acquire rare and outstanding prints: Pallant House Gallery; The Hepworth, Wakefield; The Fry Art Gallery; Swindon Museum and Art Gallery; Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre; Swanage Museum; Leamington Spa Museum and Art Gallery; Victoria Art Gallery, Bath; The Chambers Collection; Churchill College, Cambridge; Downing College, Cambridge and Balliol College, Oxford; all hold pieces from me.
After five years research, my catalogue raisonné Terry Frost Prints was published by Lund Humphries in 2010. It has since become the primary reference source for Terry’s prints and is cited by auction houses and private and public collections worldwide. Other published work includes Henry Moore A Journey Through Printmaking (Goldmark 2023), essays on Michael Ayrton, Henry Cliffe, Terry Frost and Fedrico Garcia Lorca, and Authenticatiing Prints (Printmaking Today 2024). I am currently working on The Last Woman Beheaded, my first novel, due to be published next year.
From 2010 I have been a regular exhibitor with the British Art Fair at the Royal College of Art and Saatchi Gallery, and also the London Original Print Fair at Somerset House. I am an auctioneer and valuer for Modern Art Auctions, and an off-camera valuer for BBC's Flog It! I even appeared as an auctioneer in Miss Potter, a film about Beatrix Potter with Renée Zellweger.
Well, I think that's enough about me now – where's a trumpet mute when you need one!
